Shockwave Therapy
Shockwave therapy is part of our advanced treatment options designed to support pain relief, tissue healing, and long-term recovery. This non-invasive technology is used to help reduce chronic pain, improve mobility, and stimulate the body’s natural healing response. For many patients, shockwave therapy becomes a powerful addition to their care plan, helping them return to daily activities with less pain and greater confidence.
Shockwave therapy uses high-energy acoustic (sound) waves that are delivered directly to injured or painful tissues. These sound waves create a controlled micro-stimulation within the tissue, which helps jump-start the body’s natural healing process. When shockwaves reach the affected area, they increase blood flow, stimulate cellular regeneration, and promote the breakdown of unhealthy or scarred tissue. This process can reduce inflammation, decrease pain, and improve tissue flexibility and function.
One of the key benefits of shockwave therapy is that it targets the source of pain without the need for surgery or injections. Unlike invasive treatments, shockwave therapy works by encouraging the body to heal itself, making it an excellent option for patients dealing with chronic or stubborn conditions that have not fully responded to traditional treatments. It can be used on its own or combined with physical therapy to enhance overall outcomes.
Who is a Good Candidate for Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave therapy can benefit a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions and is especially effective for patients experiencing:
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Achilles Tendinopathy
- Patellar Tendinopathy
- Tennis or Golfer’s Elbow
- Shoulder Tendinopathy / Calcific Shoulder Pain
- Chronic Muscle Tightness
- Heel Pain
- Long-standing Soft Tissue Injuries
Patients with chronic pain, tendon injuries, or conditions that have been slow to heal may be excellent candidates. Your physical therapist will determine whether shockwave therapy is appropriate based on your diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment goals.
What does shockwave therapy feel like?
Shockwave treatments are applied directly to the skin, as clothing can interfere with the transmission of the sound waves. During treatment, patients typically feel rhythmic tapping or pulsing sensations in the area being treated. Some areas may feel mildly uncomfortable, especially over sensitive or chronically injured tissue, but the intensity can be adjusted to ensure the treatment remains tolerable.
Each session is relatively short, and most patients are able to return to normal activities immediately afterward. Mild soreness following treatment is possible and usually resolves within a day or two.
How many shockwave treatments do you need?
Many patients begin to notice improvement within three to five treatments, although this can vary depending on the condition, severity, and individual healing response. Shockwave therapy is often delivered once per week over several weeks. Your physical therapist will create a customized plan based on your specific condition and recovery goals.
