We’re excited to introduce one of the newest members of Carolina Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine, Brandon Young! A lifelong runner with nearly 11 years of experience as a Physical Therapist, Brandon is a graduate of the University of South Carolina and has been working in the outpatient orthopedic field since graduation. His passion for running has fueled his dedication to working with both injured and non-injured runners, helping them optimize their performance and recover safely. Brandon is also leading our new Running Clinic, designed to support runners at every level. We recently sat down with Brandon to learn more about his background, specialties, and the unique expertise he brings to the Carolina PT family.
Brandon’s Background & Experience
JB: Where did you go to school, and what degrees or certifications do you have?
BY:I attended the University of South Carolina for undergrad and PT school. I have further certifications as a strength and conditioning specialist and orthopedic manual therapist. I also have my level 1 run coach certification from the RRCA (Road Runners Club of America).
JB: How many years have you been working in physical therapy?
BY: 11 years
JB: What specific training or certifications do you have?
BY: Level 1 Run Coach Certification from the RRCA; multiple continuing education courses addressing working with injured runners and performing treadmill running gait analysis.
JB: You also have ties with Strictly Running in Columbia, SC. Can you tell us more about that partnership?
BY: We recently partnered with Strictly Running to provide free running seminars for the community. These topics range from “Improving Performance” to “Reducing Injury Risk While Running” to “How to Program Your Training for A Successful Race.” We also have a partnership with them where current and former clients can get 10% off shoes and inserts. Feel free to stop by our Forest Acres or Downtown Office to get your referral!
I also participate in a weekly run club that meets at Savage Craft Ale Works in West Columbia where we do a group run and then a gathering afterwards.
Brandon’s Personal Journey
JB: Can you describe your experience with running? When did you start, what notable races or events have you completed, and what keeps you passionate about it?
BY: I began running recreationally my freshman year of college as I was getting out of competitive sports. One reason I gravitated to it is that I love being outside in nature. I love running trails and along the river. Over the years I grew to love running because it was a way for me to stay healthy both physically and mentally. It has been a way for me to reduce stress and be outside. I’ve always been mostly a lone runner because I enjoy the time alone to decompress and be alone with my thoughts.
JB: What is your favorite local running trail?
BY: I love running the trails at Harbison State Forest and along the River Walk in Cayce/West Columbia
Services for Runners
JB: Can you give us an overview of the running-related services you’ll be offering at Carolina PT?
BY: Treadmill running gait analysis, strength and mobility training geared towards runners, physical therapy for injured runners.
JB: How these services benefit runners of all levels—from beginners to competitive athletes?
BY: My overall goal as a physical therapist working with injured runners is to keep them running. That may mean we reduce intensity or volume while we treat the underlying problem , but ultimately I want them to keep running if possible. The services that we provide will allow us to do that – keep runners running. They can also help us to reduce the risk of injury. Gait analysis and strength and mobility training can reduce injury risk and put runners in the best possible place where they can achieve their running goals whether that’s competing, running socially or just getting healthier. These services can also be used to improve performance whether that’s improving times, running longer and faster.
Goals for Carolina PT
JB: What do you hope to accomplish by bringing this specialty to CPT?
BY: I hope to make local runners aware of the resources available to them. Dealing with a running related injury or reaching a plateau in your training can be very frustrating but there are individuals, like myself, who are passionate about working with this community and helping them get past these difficulties.
JB: Can you tell us about your workshops with Strictly Running and any other community involvement you’re part of?
BY: We have recently partnered with Strictly Running to host quarterly seminars where we discuss different topics related to running.. We have hosted 2 so far. The first one we discussed improving performance and reducing injury and the second one was about how to program your training for a successful race.
